There are aspects of planning a vacation that are really fun, and then those that are not so much. Today we should discuss Travel Insurance. Why is it so important? Should you purchase it, not purchase it? Aren’t all policies the same?
Let’s start with WHY travel insurance is so important. If you’ve ever had to rely on, or file a claim with, your travel insurance, you may already have answers to this question.
Here are some thought provoking scenarios that may occur.
#1 – Your flight has been delayed or cancelled and now there is no chance you’ll make it to your destination until the next day. What do you do? Well hopefully the airline and your travel agent will assist in getting you to your destination as quickly as possible, but unfortunately you will miss at least one night of your accommodation, or possibly your cruise. Some policies cover for missed accommodations and can reimburse you for that missed time.
#2 – You become ill or have an injury which causes you to cancel your non-refundable vacation. Without travel insurance I would venture to say that you are out your money. With insurance, as long as you are cancelling for a covered reason of the policy, you may be reimburse for all prepaid, non-refundable and insured amounts.
#3 – An immediate family member has passes away and you are not able to take your vacation. While this is a tragic event and we hope that the airlines, hotels, cruise lines, etc. would be sympathetic and make an exception, the reality is they do not. Without insurance you will not be reimbursed.
#4 – You depart on time, make it to your destination, and all is well. A few days into the trip you fall, break your leg and require immediate medical attention. Did you know that most health insurance policies will not cover you when traveling outside of the US. Who is going to pay for your medical bills then? And did you know that many foreign hospitals will not treat you without payment upfront? Again, who is going to pay this? A great travel insurance policy will arrange for payment on your behalf so that you receive the prompt medical attention that you need.
#5 – Dreaded weather and hurricanes. No one wants to have their well-deserved, and hard-earned, vacation ruined by a hurricane, correct? Well believe it or not, it happens and vacations are not exactly what you intended. Worse case scenario they may be a total nightmare. I don’t know anyone who would want that.
There are numerous scenarios that can play out and it is impossible to cover them all. The most important factor to remember is that you should protect your investment, as much as possible, should something happen. We protect our homes, cars, jewelry and other material items of value, why not protect a vacation that could cost thousands of dollars?
Are all policies the same? The short answer is NO, not all policies are the same. Most companies will offer several different products, with varying levels of coverage, inclusions and price points. The key here is to compare them and choose the protection that is best for your needs.
Should you purchase it or not? Is it really worth the money? This is not a question that can be answered easily and we are not giving any specific advice in this post. Every person has different thoughts, beliefs and needs. Start with asking yourself this question, “Can I afford to lose my vacation investment should something occur and I need to cancel?” If you can afford to lose your entire vacation amount and not worry about it, than maybe you can live without insurance. If you cannot afford to, you should rethink purchasing coverage.
With any insurance policy there is a Description of Coverage, “the guiding principle of the policy” that outlines all of the terms, conditions and details of coverage. This is the fine print and should be read carefully. Do no assume that any old reason is covered or any old scenario. Just because you have insurance does not mean everything possible is covered. It is best to make an informed decision with any purchase.
Please note: the information in this post is not meant to advise, solicit, or sell any travel insurance policy. Nor is it to be used in making any decisions based on the information above. I strongly suggest you speak with a travel insurance professional to discuss your individual situation before making any decision or purchasing any policy.
