It has been your lifelong dream to be married on a white sand beach with the turquoise clear blue water as your backdrop. Such a lovely setting for anyone to see!
Having recently attended a destination wedding seminar at the Karisma Hotels in the Riviera Maya, Mexico was a great experience that certainly enhanced my knowledge of weddings in this area. I was able to experience the physical aspects of having a wedding at several resorts in the area. It is such an advantage to experience what my couples’ actual weddings can be like. To experience all of the components I am not able to experience from a desk or a computer.
During my stay I saw numerous wedding ceremony locations, from beachside, rooftop terrace, wedding gazebo to a beachfront chapel, all decorated in a variety of colors and styles. I had the opportunity to meet with wedding coordinators from several resorts, the resort managers, chefs, and even attend a vow renewal ceremony, cocktail reception and private dinner event. Not only did I learn about the wedding package options and what is included in each, I was able to experience the actual event. That experience alone is priceless.
It was a busy 5 days, attending training, round table discussions, learning, seeing, and experiencing. Out of all the events I attended, I have to say the most memorable and most important in my opinion, is the time spent with the actual staff! I really got to learn about them individually, not just what their job title is, but their work ethic and why what they do is important to them. And they in turn got to know more about me, my business and the type of clients I work with. Building this type of business relationships with real people is very important. It turns that reservation “number” into an actual name and I truly believe they will go above and beyond to ensure all of my clients are happy with their experience, whether it be a vacation, anniversary, honeymoon or wedding!
I gained so much knowledge during this session that it is impossible to narrow it down to something brief! What can I share to help ensure that your destination wedding is all you dreamed it would be and truly unforgettable? Here are a few key tips:
#1 – Work with a professional who is experienced in destination weddings. Not only in the particular destination you have chosen but also someone who has knowledge of the resorts, wedding packages and can help you to determine which option best fits your needs. This is a VERY special and important day. There is no need to stress about the details, let a professional help guide you through the process so you can relax and be confident you have made the right choice.
#2 – Be sure to articulate your dream. Take your vision and describe it words, pictures, whatever it takes to get the details across so there is nothing left out.
#3 – If you are planning to be married on a specific (or popular) date, during peak travel times, or plan to have more than 20 guests, plan early. I suggest a minimum of 9-12 months in advance. The entire wedding does not need to be planned this early, but you will want to have the resort, ceremony and reception locations, date and time confirmed in advance, as well as a block of rooms if you have more than 20 guests.
#4 -Think outside of the box for your event. There are SO many options available to ensure that your wedding matches your personality. Some options may have an additional cost with them, however, in the end it is you that needs to be happy with your day. This is your once in a lifetime day, make it unforgettable!
